1974: Chris Evert vs. Miss Musket
Back in 1972, Hollywood Park hosted its first match race when Convenience and Typecast battled it out in the stretch as the former got the win.
It only took two seasons for the Track of the Lakes and Flowers to stage its second showdown. And with it came another episode in the East-West rivalry in the summer of 1974.
The main players were a pair of three-year-old fillies. Hailing from the East was Chris Evert, who had yet to be worse than third in any of her starts. Competing mostly in New York, she was coming off a very rare sweep of the Triple Tiara as she captured the Acorn, Mother Goose and Coaching Club American Oaks.
The Western representative was a Florida-bred filly named Miss Musket. Another multiple stakes winner, she had done well during the first half of 1974 as she took races that included the Santa Ysabel at Santa Anita, the Fantasy Stakes at Oaklawn, and the Grade II Hollywood Oaks.
