The 1962 Kentucky Derby
The official number of starters for the 1962 Kentucky Derby came out to be fifteen, but if you asked the majority of those with a betting interest in that year's race, they might have told you that it was a two-horse race.
And who were those two? One was Ridan, who went into the Run for the Roses with victories in the Hibiscus Stakes and Florida Derby. The other was Sunrise County, who placed in the Gotham Stakes and Wood Memorial before heading to Louisville.
Of the fifteen horses entered in Derby number eighty-eight, Ridan and Sunrise County were the only two at low odds. Ridan hovered around even money while Sunrise County floated near 3-1. And everyone else? They were pretty much relegated to longshot status with little to no chance of upsetting the two chief horses.
But one horse served as the exception, for he was the only other horse to not be in the longshot category.
