Muth
He began his career as a debut winner. Then he became a Kentucky Derby hopeful. And he would finish his time at the races a multiple graded stakes winner.
Owned by Zedan Racing Stables, Muth was a grandson of Uncle Mo, who liked being in early contention. It did not take long for people to see that Muth clearly received that trait from his talented damsire. The huge odds-on favorite in his debut at Santa Anita in June 2023, Muth had command early in the five furlong dirt sprint. He not only won, he manhandled his competition by a tremendous margin under Juan Hernandez, the only rider Muth would ever team up with.
As a two-year old in the Bob Baffert barn, Muth was one to watch as Del Mar's summer meet and stakes for juveniles rolled around. Sent straight to the Grade III level, Muth next showed up in the six furlong Best Pal Stakes in mid-August. He ran well in his graded stakes debut, finishing behind only his stablemate, Prince of Monaco.
While Prince of Monaco went on to win the Grade I Del Mar Futurity a few weeks later, Muth returned to Santa Anita. Entered in the Grade I American Pharoah Stakes in early October, Muth now had the chance to run longer like his sire, Good Magic, had back in his racing days. The distance pedigree was clearly on display here. Again the heavy chalk, Muth and Hernandez spent much of the race tracking the leader on the inside. Straightening into the stretch, Muth took over and was a decisive winner as he took his first Grade I. And that gave him a spot in the Grade I Breeders' Cup Juvenile.
Muth had a connection with this contest well before he even entered the starting gate. Good Magic had won the race back in 2017 at Del Mar. Could his colt add another Juvenile to the family collection at Santa Anita?
It ended up not coming to fruition, though Muth ran on for second after another tracking trip. The lone Thoroughbred to beat him that day was Fierceness, who would go on to win the Grade I Florida Derby and Grade I Travers Stakes the following year. Despite the loss, Muth still earned a spot as a finalist for Champion Two-Year-Old honors (which would also be won by Fierceness).
After a nice two-year-old campaign, Muth embarked on the Kentucky Derby trail with his fellow sophomores. It got started on the first weekend of 2024 in the Grade II San Vicente Stakes at seven-eighths of a mile. Once more, the price was below even money, but Muth justified the odds by using a good tracking trip and turning it into a stout finish in the stretch to get the win.
Next on Muth's Kentucky Derby trail was the Grade I Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park. Good Magic was nomadic in his career, and as a result won while shipping. Muth did the same at Oaklawn. Staying close to early leader and race favorite Timberlake, Muth got past him and showed himself to be the strongest in the stretch as he made it two in a row. But the Derby trail would stop there for Muth. He ultimately would not make the run to Louisville, and he would not appear in the Preakness or Belmont Stakes. But he was not done, either.
Back at Del Mar in late summer, Muth made his return to the races in the one mile Shared Belief Stakes. No one came anywhere close to him on the tote board, and that proved symbolic. Following another perfect tracking trip, Muth took over in the far turn and emerged the clear winner when the camera flashed. After months on the bench, Muth's fans were not disappointed by the return of their horse.
The Shared Belief would be the last great moment of Muth's career. His last two starts came in a pair of Grade I contests: the inaugural California Crown a few weeks later and the Grade I Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Del Mar in early November. He was in striking distance of the front like usual on both occasions, but he did not have enough to get the win in either race and was well beaten both times.
Muth was retired following the Dirt Mile. He finished up his career with five wins and two seconds in nine starts, a consistent horse like his sire. And though there might be wonder as to how Muth might have fared in the Triple Crown races or what he could have done as an older horse, there is still no denying Muth's talent on the racetrack. He will go down as one of the most talented three-year-olds of 2023.
