Grazen

The career of this Cal-bred spanned just over one year. During that time he moved up the Thoroughbred ranks, even capturing a graded stakes race. Though his time in competition was rather short, he has gone on to have a more lengthy and successful career as a stallion in his home state.

Long before he entered the breeding shed, Grazen entered a maiden special weight event in the early days of the 2008 Oak Tree meet at Santa Anita. The debut was not exactly newsworthy, as the Benchmark colt began his time as a racehorse with a slow start out of the gate. He was not a factor in that sprint around Santa Anita's main track, finishing well behind the winner in tenth place for trainer Mike Mitchell.

A layoff of just about seven months followed that outing, and Grazen commenced his three-year-old season at Hollywood Park. Despite losing against maidens first time out, the connections entered him in the 6 1/2 furlong NTRA Stakes. With noted money rider Garrett Gomez in the irons, Grazen had a much better start in his debut at the Track of the Lakes and Flowers. A longshot at over 12-1, Grazen was in contention early, and he overcame a pace duel with a rival to prevail handily in what was the start of a productive spring and summer for the Cal-bred.

Of the three major Southern California tracks, Hollywood Park was by far the one Grazen thrived on the most. After the NTRA Stakes, the gray/roan Thoroughbred went from a sprint to a route while taking on allowance foes a few weeks later. Teaming with Rafael Bejarano again after they collaborated in his debut, Grazen made good on his post time favorite status. At odds of 6-5, he led for virtually the entire mile and one-sixteenth before finishing strongly in a decisive win against open company for the first time.

After that, it was back to stakes company, namely in the Grade III Affirmed Handicap. Again contesting a mile and one-sixteenth, Grazen and Bejarano delivered a performance similar to their previous race. Going off as the chalk at 8-5 this time, they were in front for much of the way before defeating everyone handily en route to the biggest win of Grazen's career.

Next came the Grade II Swaps Stakes in the middle of July. Asked to go a mile and one-eighth, Grazen ran well as the 7-10 top choice. He and Bejarano were in the mix the whole way, ultimately finishing second to future Santa Anita Handicap champion Misremembered. This closed out Grazen's time at Hollywood Park, and he would be out for a few weeks after that.

Returning to action at Del Mar as the summer meet was wrapping up, Grazen reunited with Gomez in the one mile El Cajon Stakes on the main track. The time off did not have an effect on the bettors, as they made Grazen the favorite at 1.30-1. After tracking the pacesetter with a ground saving trip, Grazen got the opening he needed in the stretch. He went between horses and held off an opponent to collect the win in his lone start by the beach.

When early October rolled around, Grazen got another chance to prove himself at a mile and an eighth. Back at Santa Anita for the California Cup Classic, Grazen and Gomez joined forces once more against five other Thoroughbreds. Sent off at 4-5 odds, Grazen and Gomez led for most of the race before Grazen was pulled up in the stretch. He would never race again after that.

Grazen would be fine, however. He went on to start a stallion career, and he has produced several successful horses in California:

Barbara Beatrice (black type stakes winner)

Connie Swingle (black type stakes winner and multiple listed stakes winner)

Desmond Doss (multiple black type stakes winner and graded stakes placed)

Enola Gray (multiple black type stakes winner, graded stakes winner, and 2016 CTBA Champion Three-Year-Old Female)
