Goal Oriented

In a career that spanned just shy of nine months, Goal Oriented did quite a bit of traveling. He also did some winning.

That began at Santa Anita in early April 2025. Entered in a six furlong maiden special weight event on the main track, Goal Oriented showed why he went off as the favorite. Off the pace early, he rallied under perennial top rider Juan Hernandez and caught everyone as he ran on the outside part of the oval to win convincingly for trainer Bob Baffert.

But sprinting was not all he could do. For his followup, the Not This Time colt was asked to go a mile and one-sixteenth next time out. In addition, he was shipped to Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby undercard. Taking on allowance optional claimers that day, Goal Oriented was in the race early, leading at every point of call before making it two in a row (this time with another top jockey in Flavien Prat).

More shipping was in store for Goal Oriented, as he joined the Triple Crown scene next. Part of the Preakness Stakes lineup two weeks later, Goal Oriented and Prat wre in contention for much of the way before making contact with eventual winner Journalism and finishing fourth. The Grade I Haskell Stakes at Monmouth went a little better for the duo, for they were again in the early mix. They even led briefly before battling with Gosger and taking third after Journalism caught them both to win.

Goal Oriented was back two months later, again popping up East. This time it was for Parx Racing's Grade I Pennsylvania Derby. Teaming with Irad Ortiz, Jr., the dark bay/brown Thoroughbred again engaged in the early battle up front. Once more, he had the lead late, but third place was his calling for the second straight race, as Baeza got by him late to win and Magnitude caught him for second.

Despite the losing streak, Goal Oriented was entered in the Grade I Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Del Mar in early November. Now with Luis Saez in the irons, Goal Oriented was within striking distance for a good part of the race. But he did not have enough to match stablemates Nysos and Citizen Bull, who fought to a photo finish (Nysos won) while Goal Oriented took sixth in the lowest finish of his career.

The return to Southern California did not go well, but Goal Oriented found one more big moment. And it happened at the track that started it all. Entered in the Grade I Malibu Stakes on opening day, Goal Oriented returned to sprinting. With another new jockey in Joel Rosario, Goal Oriented went off favored. Despite the fact a couple of his stablemates were scratched from the race, Goal Oriented defeated a couple more along with some additional opponents.

Coming from behind like he did on debut, Goal Oriented made the most of a quick pace and overtook fellow Baffert trainee Midland Money in the closing seconds to win the Malibu in an excellent time of 1:20.97.

It was a fantastic way to close out the year, but no one knew it would also be the way Goal Oriented closed out his career. A couple of weeks after the Malibu, Goal Oriented was retired and sent to stud. Given the talent he showed at three years of age, it makes one wonder how he could have done in a campaign as an older horse.

Though that is not going to be known, this much can be said about Goal Oriented. He took on the best the sport had to offer. He did well as a shipper. He won at a couple of different tracks. He won going short and long. He also earned respect, as he was always lower than 10-1 odds in every race he entered.

But Goal Oriented also had heart, and it showed when he was in action. For that fact alone, he was easy to admire.
