Fun to Dream
Winning was fun for her, and she did that several times between the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
Sired by Arrogate, the California-bred Fun to Dream inherited her dad's gray/roan color and determination to win. She enjoyed tracking the pace and making her move, which was seen from the very start.
Trained by Sean McCarthy and ridden by Juan Hernandez, Fun to Dream overcame a wide trip on debut at Santa Anita and opened up in the stretch to win in a smashing first outing at six furlongs. Her odds that day were 7-10, so the fact that Fun to Dream had her picture taken was not a surprise. And like her sire, more pictures were on the way.
For the rest of the 2022 season, Fun to Dream pretty much did nothing but win. Save for a ninth place finish at Del Mar (which was the result of a disqualification for interference after she initially finished second), Fun to Dream topped all her rivals while showing her class. In her first try against winners (and first start for new trainer Bob Baffert), Fun to Dream made quick work of her rivals and won Del Mar's seven furlong Fleet Treat Stakes by a huge margin.
Next came the race in which she was disqualified, but she shook that off with no trouble and came right back to win an allowance optional claimer when she returned to Santa Anita in early October. Again, Fun to Dream was flashy. Just before the quarter pole, she made her charge to the front and opened up in the stretch to prove she was the best horse in the group. With her final odds being 2-5, many foresaw what turned out to be another win in the Cal-bred's growing career.
Going back to her class, Fun to Dream also had no problem fighting for the win. Back at Del Mar for the Betty Grable Stakes in mid-November, Fun to Dream added the seven furlong black-type event to her resume after being named the overwhelming favorite at 1-5. But there was no daylight margin of victory. Rather, she fought with Taming the Tigress in the stretch and showed her stamina at the end to emerge in front by a head. Clearly a tough horse, Fun to Dream would again exhibit her class again during the 2022 season. And it would happen on one of Southern California racing's biggest days of the year.
The Grade I La Brea Stakes has long been part of Santa Anita's Opening Day program, and Fun to Dream was entered in the seven furlong contest on December 26. Going into the La Brea, Fun to Dream had beaten open company before. But, she had not done so in a stakes race. Still, her form throughout the season could not be overlooked, and she was the second choice in the race at a little over 5-2, trailing only Midnight Memories in the wagering.
But when the La Brea was in the books, Fun to Dream was first. After staying near the leaders, she took control in the stretch and held off a game rival in Awake at Midnyte to win at the highest level in the sport. It was a perfect ending to a spectacular season, and the La Brea played a role in Fun to Dream being the big winner at the California Thoroughbred Breeders' Association Awards for 2022. She won the most trophies that night, taking home Champion Cal-bred Three Year Old Female, Cal-bred Sprinter and Cal-bred Horse of the Year. All three honors were richly deserved following a campaign that saw her win five races (four of them being sprints) and three stakes.
Fun to Dream got her 2023 season started in early February. Back at seven-eighths of a mile, she took on five horses in the Grade II Santa Monica Stakes. At fifty cents on the dollar, Fun to Dream did what she had for most of her career. Initially last going down the backstretch, though only a couple of lengths from the front, Fun to Dream gradually got past other horses before she found herself in third place in the stretch. With about a furlong to go, her class proved to be too much as she got to the front and put on a nice blast of acceleration just before the wire.
With spring on the horizon, Fun to Dream returned to Grade I company in March. The race was the Beholder Mile, and Fun to Dream put her usual tactics to use. In the stretch run, she had the lead by a couple of lengths, but a surprise quickly happened as Grade III winning shipper A Mo Reay rallied to catch her in a photo finish. The outcome was unexpected, but Fun to Dream was not disgraced as she continued a terrific run of consistency.
Following a layoff of close to five months, Fun to Dream resurfaced at Del Mar for the Grade I Clement L. Hirsch Stakes in August. The outcome was a surprise, as Fun to Dream faded to last in the five horse field. It was only the second time that she finished a race unplaced, and the other notable fact coming out of the Clement L. Hirsch was the fact that someone other than Juan Hernandez piloted Fun to Dream (he rode the winner, Adare Manor). Ramon Vazquez would exit the race being able to claim he was the only other jockey to collaborate with Fun to Dream.
A few weeks later, Fun to Dream did get a measure of redemption. One year to the day of her disqualification at Del Mar and following the Clement L. Hirsch Stakes, Fun to Dream reunited with Hernandez for the Tranquility Lake at a mile. She did not get the win, but she did hang on for third.
When November rolled around, Fun to Dream was sold at the Fasig-Tipton Fall Sale. After a ten race career that saw six wins, a second and a third, Fun to Dream was finished with racing. She was classy, strong, talented, and did very well sprinting. That was her true calling card, as she only lost one race that was under a mile. She also was a force as a middle distance runner. In four starts at seven furlongs, Fun to Dream went undefeated. Some horses are just terrific at certain distances, and Fun to Dream was one of them.
Following a successful career, it can be said that Fun to Dream was a real racehorse.
